“I see your friend Ying doesn’t want to know you now,” says Bao crossly. “Still,” he adds, meaning to be kind but unable to stop himself being a little smug on my behalf, “It cannot be easy for her to know that you are a favourite with the Emperor now and that she is not.”

I sit silently by the window and watch the breeze tug at the falling leaves.

“Girl, hurry up!” exclaims Bao, cuffing a maid on the side of the head as she passes him. “Your mistress’ bath must be ready at once or there will be no time to prepare her. And she is in favour now, she must not keep the Emperor waiting!” Even when speaking to the maids Bao cannot keep himself from mentioning my new status, the words tumble eagerly from his mouth every time he opens it.
